L’usage du français en physique

"Language is not just a means of communication, it is the bearer of a culture and a unique vision of the world. A language is not a different way of saying the same things, it is a different way of looking at those things'. This reflection by philologist Barbara Cassin, CNRS gold medallist, taken from an interview with the Journal du CNRS (19/11/2014), was part of the answer to the question "Is it desirable to impose a single language on the human sciences, as English has imposed itself on the hard sciences?
Shouldn't we also ask ourselves what role language plays in physics? In France, physics has to deal with two languages: international English and French. But isn't the ever-decreasing use of French in the research world in danger of undermining the dissemination of scientific culture in French? And even a certain "French" view of the world? What are the linguistic problems faced by physicists? This mini-colloquium will try to answer these questions.
